Abstract
The ikat weaving of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is one of Indonesia’s cultural heritages that possesses high historical, aesthetic, and philosophical values and serves as a cultural identity of the communities in each region of NTT. In addition to being a clothing product, ikat weaving has also developed as part of the creative economy. However, amid the development of the times, the weaving tradition in NTT faces various problems, such as the low regeneration of young weavers, limited educational and production facilities, and the lack of representative spaces to support the preservation and development of weaving sustainably. These conditions indicate the need for a facility that is capable of accommodating cultural preservation activities as well as the development of a creative economy based on NTT ikat weaving. The design of the East Nusa Tenggara Weaving Gallery in Kupang City aims to present an integrated facility capable of accommodating exhibition, educational, workshop, production, promotion, and sales activities for distinctive NTT woven products. Kupang City was chosen because it has a strategic position as the capital city of East Nusa Tenggara Province as well as a tourism gateway. The Neo-Vernacular architectural approach is applied by adapting the forms, spatial arrangements, materials, and architectural elements of traditional NTT architecture into contemporary architecture. The design concept processes the mass arrangement pattern of Ratenggaro Village, the transformation of the forms of Uma Mbatangu and Sa’o traditional houses, and the application of woven motifs as the visual identity of the building. The design method uses the J.C. Jones method through the stages of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The design result produces an East Nusa Tenggara Weaving Gallery area consisting of exhibition gallery areas, workshop spaces, production spaces, commercial areas, a multifunction hall, plaza, and educational spaces integrated through circulation patterns and mass arrangements based on the neo-vernacular concept. The appearance of the building is realized through the transformation of the roof forms of NTT traditional houses, the use of woven motifs on the façade, and the arrangement of outdoor spaces that support cultural activities and social interaction. This design is expected to become a medium for cultural preservation and a center for the development of the local creative economy in East Nusa Tenggara. Keywords: Weaving Gallery, East Nusa Tenggara, Neo-Vernacular, Local Culture, Creative Economy.
