Abstract
The Sasak people are the largest ethnic group on the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, renowned for their rich cultural heritage and traditions that are still preserved today. However, the rapid flow of modernization and the growing tourism industry have begun to shift daily life, especially in terms of cultural preservation. Many young generations are gradually losing interest in local traditions, drawn instead to global popular culture. Therefore, an engaging and relevant approach is needed—particularly through visual media such as photography—to safeguard cultural heritage. In this final project, a qualitative research method was applied through direct observation, interviews, and photographic documentation. Field observations were conducted in two culturally significant locations: Sade Village and Karang Bajo Bayan Village. The ethnophotography approach was chosen as the primary method for its ability to capture not only visual elements but also the cultural meanings and social narratives of the Sasak community’s daily life. The analysis shows that the Sasak people continue to practice various traditions such as Merarik, Peresean, traditional weaving, and maintain customary architecture in their homes. The concept of the ethnophotography book combines documentary photography with accessible narratives that explain the cultural context behind each image. The book is designed to serve not only as documentation but also as an educational and inspirational medium, especially for younger generations. Through this ethnophotography book, Sasak culture and traditions can be reintroduced to a broader audience in a more appealing and insightful manner. Using a visual and humanistic storytelling approach, this book aims to become a cultural preservation medium that is not only informative but also emotionally resonant and inspiring for active engagement in cultural heritage conservation. Keywords: Sasak Tribe, Culture, Ethnophotography, Cultural Preservation, Visual Media
