Abstract

Children’s education plays a crucial role as the foundation for shaping a high-quality future generation. One of the essential subjects in the Merdeka Curriculu for 5th grade elementary students is ecosystems, which includes an understanding of the reciprocal relationships between living organisms and their environment. However, delivering this material still faces challenges, especially due to the lack of educational media that can attract attention and suit the characteristics of elementary school students. Content that is presented through static texts and images is often difficult for students to deeply understand This study uses a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, by collecting data through direct observation and in-depth interviews to gain a more detailed understanding of the research subject. Interviews were conducted to gather specific insights related to the topic, while direct observations were used to observe behavior and interactions in a natural context, allowing a clearer comprehension of real dynamics. In addition, literature studies and analyses of comparator books were carried out as references for designing media tailored to student characteristics. All collected data were analyzed to formulate a visual and interactive solution that supports students’ comprehension of ecosystem concepts in a fun and educational way. Based on the analysis, a concept was formulated for the design of an interactive illustrated book titled "Adventure in the Ecosystem World". The book follows a fantasy adventure of a girl named Aluna as she explores the ecosystem world with the help of animal characters. The visuals are created using digital illustrations in a bright and simple cartoon style, in line with children's preferences. The book also features interactive elements such as lift-the-flap and pop-up mechanisms to encourage visual exploration and spark learning interest. The design concept aligns with the principles of active learning in the Merdeka Curriculum, which encourages students to engage independently and reflectively in the learning process. Through the design of this book, it is expected that an educational medium can be created to assist in delivering ecosystem material in a more engaging, enjoyable, and easily understood manner. This book not only serves as a visual learning resource but also helps foster early environmental awareness and responsibility for nature conservation.
