Abstract

Kebaya is an important part of Indonesia's national identity. Historical records state that kebaya has existed in Indonesia since the 15th century. Kebaya then went through various developments and declines in status in Indonesia, through various periods from Dutch colonialism to Indonesian independence. Kebaya was finally recognized as Indonesia's national fashion at the 1978 Workshop in Jakarta. Now, the government is trying to get international recognition for kebaya as a cultural heritage through UNESCO. The recognition of kebaya internationally certainly requires a lot of support from various levels of society. This is especially important to be done by children who are the successors of the nation. Therefore, this design takes the target of designing children aged 7-12 years to be given a media so that they can get to know more about their national clothing, namely the kebaya. The media chosen is an illustrated book by looking at the characteristics of children of that age who, although they can think logically about something real, will have difficulty understanding something abstract. Illustration books can help make it easier for children to understand the content of the book. The book is designed with a descriptive data analysis method from primary and secondary data taken through questionnaires, observations, interviews, focus group discussions, and literature studies. From the data analysis, it was found that a keyword "kebaya manifestation of cultural aesthetics" was then applied to the design concept. The result is an illustration book entitled "Kebaya: Aesthetic Clothing from Indonesia" with a cartoon illustration drawing style, with bright colors, and typography with blunt and not rigid ends. The book will discuss various topics regarding kebaya ranging from history, types, materials, decorations, supports, packages, to kebaya modifications. The material in the book will be delivered in informal and standard language so that it is easier for children to understand. There are also supporting media from books such as keychains, book dividers, character cards, notebooks, pop sockets, fans, t-shirts, x-banners, snack bowls, and Instagram social media. This book is expected to help children to gain a broader knowledge about kebaya and understand the importance of kebaya. The knowledge in the book can make children interested in learning about kebaya and wearing kebaya. Keywords: Aesthetic Fashion, Cartoon Illustration, National Identity, Cultural Beauty
