Abstract

The creative economy has been a major focus of discussion in Indonesia for the past two years as a potential solution for economic advancement. Although this sector contributes significantly to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 2022 marked a turning point for the growth of the creative economy in Indonesia, with East Java Province playing an important role in this sector. Surabaya, as the second-largest creative economy hub in Indonesia, is crucial in its role. However, despite having a large number of creative economy actors, the existing facilities are inadequate to optimally facilitate the growth of the creative industry. The lack of facilities has become an obstacle to fostering collaboration and innovation among creative actors. The limitations of the facilities affect the creative process. Nevertheless, efforts have been made to create a creative and digital economy hub in Surabaya, but as of 2023, the available facilities are still limited. Creative actors in Surabaya and Indonesia as a whole face challenges in conducting their creative activities optimally due to the limitations of facilities and infrastructure. In line with this background and the factual issues, a creative hub becomes the solution to address these problems. In the design of the Surabaya Creative Hub, an analysis of facts, issues, and objectives related to the design object was conducted, resulting in the theme 'Collaborativity To Increase Creativity.' This theme was chosen to embody the building, which is planned to be a place for collaboration among creative actors and as a step to enhance performance and creativity. The 'Blending Space' approach is a supporting factor in creating collaborative spaces that support the growth of the creative economy in Surabaya. By combining spaces and interests of various parties, the Surabaya Creative Hub has the advantage of uniting various creative actors to support the growth of the local creative industry. Besides serving experienced creative actors or startups, this building supports its users to collaborate through combined assembly points and creative labs that still have points of contact with each other. The concept of penetrable spaces can also support collaboration among creative actors and increase awareness among them. The use of Pragmatic Design methods emphasizes the building's functionality, creating spaces for a collaborative ecosystem that can drive the growth of Surabaya's creative economy at the national level.
