Abstract
Novels are literary works of prose type which are around 40,000 words in length (Wicaksono, 2017). The story in the novel is way complex with deeper characterizations. Conflicts in the novel are told in layers, resulting in a thick book. According to statistics from UNESCO, out of a total of 61 countries, Indonesia is ranked 60th with a low literacy level. Reporting from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in 2016, out of a total of 61 countries, Indonesia in 60th on the rank with a low literacy rate. On the other hand, Thailand is in 59th place, and Botswana is in the last place. The literacy culture that exist among students is often required to read books or other readings. It is in this circle that the literacy culture does not match what is expected. According to a study in the article Increasing Young Students' Reading Interest (Dewi and Prawita, 2019), that a good way to encourage young students to be interested in reading is by using wall magazines, using flash cards, and using humor in strategies for reading aloud, reading book several times, reading a favorite book, and one of them by showing many picture books. The methodology used in this research is quantitative by using a questionnaire containing questions with activities that are the audience's favorite things in looking for something new. In addition, data collection also uses secondary data obtained through journals, mass media, reference books, and literature. For the sampling technique used in determining the target audience or segmentation, namely using a demographic target with adolescent adults aged 16-24 years, male or female, lower middle, middle and upper secondary economic levels, and high school education as well. student. Based on the data that has been obtained through distributing questionnaires to the audience, what is obtained is that the 16-24 year olds are happy to interact between reading the text and enjoying the illustrations which is presented by the book. So that the problem that will be raised in the design of this novel is to add illustrations that are in accordance with the results of the respondents to be used, with the hope that it can increase the enthusiasm for reading in adolescents. On the other hand, this design was made so that it can educate teenagers aged 16-24 years to understand how the daily life of the characters described in the novel through attractive illustrations. And with that, teenagers can take the positive side of the story presented. So that the story that has been compiled by the author can be understood by the audience and the illustrations will be packaged with attractive visuals according to the targeted target, so that the storyline and each character of the character will be conveyed clearly and easily understood by teenagers.
