Abstract

This study analyzes how first-born Generation Z audiences interpret the sandwich generation issue represented through the character Arga in the film “Tunggu Aku Sukses Nanti” (Waiting to Succeed). The film portrays a first-born child who bears economic responsibility for his parents and younger siblings. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding reception theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight first-born Generation Z informants selected using purposive sampling and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three reading positions: three informants adopted a dominant hegemonic position by accepting the first-born’s responsibility as natural; three held a negotiated position by accepting family responsibility while questioning the burden placed on a single individual; and two took an oppositional position by rejecting the narrative of total self-sacrifice based on psychological or structural awareness. These differences were influenced by personal experience, knowledge background, and gender identity. The study demonstrates the diverse ways Generation Z audiences interpret representations of the sandwich generation and first-born family responsibility.
