Abstract
The death of Affan Kurniawan in the context of demonstrations became an event that quickly captured public attention, especially after it was widely circulated on Instagram through various posts, videos, and different narratives. This condition gave rise to various interpretations among Surabaya students, because each individual interpreted the information based on their respective experiences, knowledge, and social backgrounds. This study aims to explain and understand how Surabaya students interpret the issue of Affan Kurniawan's death on Instagram, using Alfred Schutz's social phenomenology approach. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological type. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight student informants in Surabaya and non-participant observation of posts and interactions related to the issue on Instagram, then analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that students' interpretations are strongly influenced by the stock of knowledge formed from family, education, social experiences, and media consumption, so that the interpretations that emerge vary even though the event they face is the same. Social typification also plays a CRucial role in helping informants categorize the actors involved, such as officials, individuals, demonstrators, and victims, which ultimately influences their assessment of the cause and responsibility for the death. Students' motives for interpreting Affan Kurniawan's death stem from past experiences (because motive) and the goal of CRitically understanding, assessing, and responding to the event based on values of justice and humanity (in-order-to motive). This research confirms that Instagram is not merely a means of disseminating information, but rather a digital social space where the meaning of an event is continuously constructed collectively.
