Abstract
The first of this research is the high incidence of mountain accidents, which are often caused by knowledge gaps and a lack of safety readiness among hikers. Although accidents are frequently associated with natural factors, the primary root cause is human failure in preparation. The main objective of this study is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the knowledge possessed by hikers, as well as their physical, logistical, and psychological readiness in facing extreme environments. The second method employed is descriptive qualitative, with the study located at the Karangrejo hiking trail on Mount Kelud. This location was selected because it is an active volcano characterized by steep, rocky, and slippery terrain. The data collection process in this study involved in-depth interviews with several hiker informants to obtain a realistic overview of the conditions in the field. The third results confirm that the primary source of the gap is internal factors or human error. This gap is predominantly formed by internal factors due to egocentrism, which includes overconfidence, a goal-oriented mindset, dependency, and underestimating risks. These factors cause individuals to fail in integrating their knowledge with the reality of their actions (human error). The last part, the study shows that the safety of hikers on Mount Kelud is determined not only by natural factors but also by the behavior of the individual hikers. The suggestions proposed in this research focus on the urgency of shifting the internal paradigm of individual hikers to deconstruct these psychological barriers, prioritizing safety logic over personal ego.
