Abstract
This study aims to analyze the discourse of social criticism in the Stand Up Comedy “Mens Rea” performance by Pandji Pragiwaksono, which was published through the Netflix platform, using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis approach. This research focuses on the construction of social criticism through comedy as a medium for conveying messages regarding political phenomena, democracy, and social conditions in Indonesian society. The method employed in this study is descriptive qualitative, analyzing three main dimensions of discourse, namely text structure, social cognition, and social context. The results indicate that the discourse of social criticism in “Mens Rea” is constructed through narratives highlighting issues of political leadership, power practices, and the role of society in democratic life. In the text structure dimension, the study reveals the use of linguistic strategies such as humor, satire, irony, metaphor, and analogy as communicative forms of criticism. The social cognition dimension demonstrates critical perspectives toward political phenomena and the lack of public awareness in determining the direction of democratic development. Meanwhile, the social context dimension shows that the criticism conveyed is related to political, social, and cultural conditions developing in Indonesia. The contribution of this research lies in examining stand-up comedy as a critical discourse medium that functions not only as entertainment but also as a space for producing social criticism and enhancing public awareness of various societal issues.
