Abstract

This study aims to analyze the partial and simultaneous effects of Work life balance and Job satisfaction on Job hopping among Generation Z employees in Surabaya. This phenomenon has gained significant attention along with the high job mobility of the younger generation in urban environments. Generation Z has high expectations regarding work life balance and job satisfaction, making them more likely to change jobs when these expectations are not met. As a major center of economic, trade, and service activities, Surabaya offers abundant employment opportunities, which contribute to the high mobility of Generation Z employees. Consequently, job hopping has become a significant challenge for companies in retaining their workforce. This study employed a quantitative associative research design. The population was infinite, and a sample of 150 respondents was determined using the Lemeshow formula. The sampling technique used was nonprobability sampling with a purposive sampling method. The respondents were Generation Z employees (aged 18–29 years) in Surabaya who had changed jobs at least twice within the past three years. Data were collected through an online questionnaire (Google Forms) using a Likert scale and analyzed using multiple linear regression via SPSS. The F-test results indicate that work life balance and job satisfaction simultaneously have a significant effect on job hopping behavior. Partially, work life balance has a significant positive effect on job hopping. Meanwhile, job satisfaction shows a negative result and has no significant effect on job hopping. The results of the coefficient of determination R2 demonstrate the contribution of the independent variables in explaining the variation of job hopping in the research subject. It is recommended that companies evaluate work flexibility policies to optimize the retention of Generation Z employees.
