Abstract

Broken Strings, an e-book written by Aurelie Moeremans, presents the author's personal experience as a victim of child grooming and has become one of the most widely accessed and discussed digital literary works on social media. This study aims to examine the influence of exposure to the Broken Strings e-book on readers' attitudes toward child grooming by employing George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory as the primary theoretical framework. This research adopted an explanatory quantitative approach using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 100 respondents and analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS Statistics. The independent variable (X) was exposure to the Broken Strings e-book, measured through reading frequency, reading duration, and attention, while the dependent variable (Y) was readers' attitudes, measured through cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. The findings indicate that exposure to the Broken Strings e-book has a positive and significant effect on readers' attitudes toward child grooming, with a calculated t-value of 7.724 exceeding the critical t-value of 1.984 and a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that H₁ was accepted. The resulting regression equation is Y = 1.348 + 0.966X, with a standardized Beta coefficient of 0.615. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.378 indicates that 37.8% of the variance in readers' attitudes is explained by exposure to the Broken Strings e-book, while the remaining 62.2% is influenced by other factors.
