Abstract

This research aims to analize the effect of business strategy on financial distress in construction sub-sector entities publicly trade on the Indonesia Stock Exchange throughout the 2021–2024 period, with leverage included as a control variable. The research employed quantitative research design utilizing secondary data extracted from the firms' corporate annual reports. The final research sample comprised 15 companies chosen via purposive sampling, providing a total of 60 distinct observations. Data were analyzed utilizing panel data regression techniques, specifically employing the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) as optimal estimation framework. The novelty of this research lies in examining business strategy, proxied by low-cost strategy and differentiation strategy, in explaining financial distress while incorporating leverage as a control variable. The output indicate that business strategy has a significant negative impact, thereby lowering the probability of financial distress. On the other hand, leverage as a control variable exerts a significant positive impact, thereby escalating the probability of corporate financial distress. These findings suggest that effective business strategy implementation can improve operational efficiency, strengthen competitive advantage, and reduce a firm's susceptibility to financial distress. The study implies that companies should optimize business strategy implementation and manage leverage prudently to maintain financial stability and minimize financial distress risk.
