Abstract

The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots as conversational companions has become a growing phenomenon. This is evidenced by the finding that 73.8% of respondents reported having used ChatGPT as a medium for expressing their feelings or sharing their personal problems. This new form of interaction between humans and AI-based systems suggests that technology functions not only as an information-seeking tool but also as a communication platform through which Generation Z expresses emotions and personal experiences. Therefore, understanding the motives underlying Generation Z's use of ChatGPT and the level of satisfaction they obtain is an important area of study, particularly from the perspective of the Uses and Gratifications theory. This study employed a quantitative research method using an online questionnaire distributed to respondents who met the predetermined criteria. The data were analyzed using validity, reliability, and classical assumption tests, followed by the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test with the assistance of SPSS software. The findings revealed a significant difference between the motives for using ChatGPT and the gratification obtained by Generation Z when using ChatGPT as a medium for sharing personal problems. Information seeking emerged as the dominant motive, indicating that respondents primarily used ChatGPT to obtain information, explanations, suggestions, and new perspectives to better understand and cope with the problems they experienced. Meanwhile, cognitive gratification was identified as the most dominant dimension of satisfaction, as respondents reported gaining greater understanding, useful information, and new perspectives regarding the issues they faced
