Abstract
This research discusses representation of the femininity discourse by female characters in the film The Ugly Stepsister using Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis. This study is based on the construction of beauty and femininity standards in the classic Cinderella fairy tale, which positions women according to certain physical standards. The film tells the story of Elvira, Cinderella’s stepsister, who experiences social pressure to fulfill beauty standards in order to gain validation and social acceptance. This research aims to reveal the discourse of femininity, female body control, and power relations in the film. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis method, focusing on verbal, visual, narrative dimension ,subject-object positions and writer-reader positions. The results show that the female body is represented as an arena of social control through beauty standards and patriarchal culture. Elvira is positioned as a subject who actively strives to fulfill femininity standards, while at the same time becoming the object of social pressure and objectification from her surroundings. In addition, the film shows that power relations and beauty standards are not only reproduced by men, but are also internalized through relationships among women themselves. This research confirms that film plays an important role in representing and reconstructing femininity discourse in popular culture.
