Abstract

This study presents the design of an educational print book for beginner skateboarders in Surabaya, Indonesia, with emphasis on fundamental techniques and safety. Motivated by a lack of structured, locally-relevant instructional material that can speed skill acquisition and reduce injury risk, the research adopts a qualitative approach including literature review, participant observation at local skate spots, semi-structured interviews with beginners and experienced skateboarders/coaches, and user-needs analysis. The design process followed sequential stages: needs analysis, content conceptualization, prototype development, and validation through expert review and user trials. The resulting prototype includes progressive learning modules equipment introduction, basic stance and balance, pushing and turning techniques, balance exercises, safety guidelines, and basic first-aid supported by step-by-step instructions and illustrations adapted to Surabaya’s urban context. Qualitative evaluation indicated that participants and experts rated the book as clear, practical, and relevant; in particular, the instructional sequence and emphasis on safety were highlighted as strengths. The study concludes that the book has potential as an effective learning resource for beginner skateboarders and recommends future work to develop an interactive digital version and to assess long-term learning outcomes with qualitative methods.
