Abstract

This study is motivated by the widespread occurrence of labeling or ethnic stereotyping on social media, particularly within comment sections on content related to criminal cases. One notable phenomenon is the emergence of stereotypes toward the Madurese ethnic group in Instagram content discussing a motorcycle chop shop case in Nganjuk. In fact, the content does not explicitly mention the ethnic identity of the perpetrators. This study aims to analyze the construction of discourse surrounding stereotypes of the Madurese ethnic group in Instagram comment sections on such content. This research employs a qualitative approach using digital discourse analysis proposed by Rodney H. Jones, which consists of four aspects: text, context, action and interaction, as well as ideology and power. The data were collected from netizen comments on Instagram posts published on February 12 and 13, 2026. The findings indicate that stereotypes toward the Madurese ethnic group do not originate from the textual elements of the content, but are produced through netizens’ interpretations influenced by socio-cultural contexts and the nature of social media. Interactions among users further reinforce these stereotypes, while social media provides opportunities for netizens to exercise power in constructing social realities in the digital space based on their own ideologies. This study concludes that the discourse produced in the comment section represents an interpretation of digital communication practices that construct a particular version of reality regarding the Madurese ethnic group.
