Abstract

PT Atlantic Anugrah Metalindo Surabaya faces a major problem identified in the single fire door production line, namely an imbalance in workload that causes bottlenecks at the welding workstation. The actual conditions show an accumulation of Work in Process (WIP) and high idle time at subsequent workstations, resulting in suboptimal overall line efficiency, with a line efficiency value of 61.90%, Balance Delay (BD) of 38.10%, and a Smoothing Index (SI) of 148.63 minutes. Therefore, there is still room for improvement to optimize these values. The purpose of this study is to determine the line balance in the single fire door production process to increase production line efficiency at the company. The method used in this research is a quantitative method with an analysis approach of cycle time, normal time, and standard time for each work element. The line balancing techniques applied are heuristic methods, specifically Ranked Positional Weight (RPW) and Region Approach (RA). Data were collected using direct observation with a stopwatch on 12 work elements on the production floor. The results of the study revealed that after optimization using the Ranked Positional Weight (RPW) and Region Approach (RA) methods, a significant performance increase was achieved, with line efficiency reaching 97.32%, Balance Delay decreasing drastically to 2.68%, and the Smoothing Index (SI) becoming very low at 6.26 minutes. In conclusion, the application of both methods proved effective in optimizing line balance through the distribution of work elements into 5 proposed workstations. As a suggestion, the company is expected to implement the proposed methods using Ranked Positional Weight (RPW) or Region Approach (RA) to improve the line balance between workstations. Furthermore, the company is advised to conduct regular evaluations of the distribution of work elements at each workstation to prevent bottlenecks and minimize idle time.
