Abstract

The global nickel industry has experienced significant market structure changes and price volatility over the last decade due to increasing demand for nickel as a key raw material in electric vehicle batteries and the global energy transition. This study aims to analyze the effect of market concentration on nickel prices and price volatility during the period 2014–2023. Secondary data were obtained from TradeMap, USGS, and Federal Reserve Economic Data, involving 15 major nickel-producing and consuming countries. The analytical methods include market concentration measurement using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), panel data regression with a semi-log model, and ARCH/GARCH modeling to measure price volatility. The results indicate that both export HHI and import HHI have a positive and significant effect on global nickel prices, confirming that the higher the market concentration, the higher the price level formed. Meanwhile, production volume, export volume, and import volume do not have a statistically significant impact on price movements. The GARCH model results also reveal persistent volatility, with a substantial spike occurring during the 2022 global crisis. Overall, the global nickel market tends to move toward an oligopolistic structure on the supply side and an oligopsonistic structure on the demand side, which increases price sensitivity to policy changes and external shocks. Keywords: Nickel Price, Market Structure, Volatility, International Trade.
