Abstract

This study aims to determine audience perceptions of the online gambling promotion phenomenon displayed through the TikTok account @mpl.id.official and the factors that influence how audiences interpret this content. The research focuses on audience attention, interpretation, and responses to both covert and explicit promotional content, particularly in the context of the increasing distribution of online gambling advertisementsin social media and the secondary data analysis from literature and government regulations regarding online gambling. The results show that audience perceptions tend to be influenced by digital literacy levels, personal experience with the TikTok application, and media consumption patterns. Audiences generally recognize that the content contains elements of online gambling promotions, but some do not take it seriously because they consider it entertainment or part of the TikTok algorithm. Meanwhile, others expressed concern about the social and psychological impacts. The results also reveal that online gambling promotions on TikTok have the potential to affect vulnerable groups, especially teenagers and young adults, necessitating the strengthening of digital literacy, increased regulation, and oversight of content on social media.
