Abstract

The increasing number of invasion privacy from inadequate privacy management on social media forms an important background for this research. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in the Communication Privacy Management (CPM) Theory proposed by Sandra Petronio. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the participants. The study involved five informants, who were selected using purposive sampling based on predetermined criteria. The findings indicate that Generation Z’s privacy management practices in using Instagram’s privacy control features encompass several key aspects. In terms of private information, most informants demonstrate a high level of awareness regarding the importance of protecting personal information. Private boundaries are established through categorizing what types of information are appropriate or inappropriate to share, as well as determining the extent to which information is disclosed. Regarding ownership and control, informants manage their privacy by regulating their Close Friends list, such as removing certain accounts when deemed necessary, using the Hide feature to restrict access for specific users, and utilizing Story Controls to manage whether stories can be replied to or shared. In the aspect of rule-based privacy management, informants consider several criteria, including gender norms, risk–benefit ratios, cultural considerations, and personal motivations. Meanwhile, in terms of privacy management dialectics, most informants do not experience significant hesitation when sharing content through the Close Friends feature. Three informants reported no experience of privacy management dialectics, whereas two others exhibited tension between the desire to share and the need to protect their privacy.
