Abstract
A Nickel Sulfide (NiS) Plant using Laterite Nickel Ore and Sulfuric Acid with a Hydrometallurgy Process will be established in the Morowali Industrial Park area. The plant is expected to operate with a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year. The plant will run continuously for 330 days per year. Nickel Sulfide is a form of nickel product that can be further processed in downstream industries to produce a high-purity nickel metal as the final product, which can then be used as a raw material for finished goods such as batteries or stainless steel. Nickel Sulfide itself has various applications, including in the manufacture of solar cells, supercapacitors, and electro(photo)catalytic oxygen/hydrogen evolution. This is due to its high redox capability, good electrical conductivity, and thermomechanical stability. In addition, Nickel Sulfide is also useful for stainless steel production, the battery industry, copper protection, wire manufacturing, the automotive industry, coin-making materials, iron–steel alloys, anti-corrosion coating, and as a catalyst for the chemical industry. In summary, the production of Nickel Sulfide is divided into two processes: leaching and precipitation. The laterite nickel ore raw material is first reduced in size using a ball mill, then mixed with water to achieve a solid concentration of 30%. In the reactor, the slurry is reacted with an acid compound, namely 98% sulfuric acid, to extract the nickel content. The resulting product in the form of Nickel Sulfate solution is separated from its impurities, after which the product from Reactor 1 is sent to Reactor 2 to be reacted with H₂S gas. A precipitation process occurs, and the nickel content settles and forms solid Nickel Sulfide (NiS). The Nickel Sulfide is then dried using a rotary dryer to reduce moisture content. The final Nickel Sulfide product is then ready for packaging.
