Abstract

An isooctane production plant with a capacity of 120,000 tons per year is planned to be established in Bontang, East Kalimantan. The plant will operate continuously for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year. The main raw materials used are Diisobutylene (C₈H₁₆) and Hydrogen (H₂). Diisobutylene is sourced from the dimerization of Isobutylene, while hydrogen is supplied from the plant’s internal storage system. The production process involves a hydrogenation reaction carried out in a fixed-bed catalytic multitube reactor using Nickel (Ni) and Alumina (Al₂O₃) catalysts under high temperature and pressure. The reaction achieves high conversion efficiency, and the resulting isooctane (C₈H₁₈) is purified through distillation to meet the required product specifications. As a high-octane hydrocarbon, isooctane serves as a key component in premium gasoline and environmentally friendly fuels. The plant employs a Line and Staff organizational structure and is designed to accommodate 189 personnel. Supporting utilities include steam, electricity, process and cooling water, and fuel, with respective capacities of approximately 90.98 kg/h of steam, 311.1 kWh of electricity, 6,614.73 m³/day of water, and 0.14 L/h of fuel. The total land area required for the facility is around 35,800 m². The economic evaluation indicates the feasibility of the project, with key parameters including a 2-year construction period, 10-year plant life, Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) of Rp 1.521 trillion, Working Capital (WC) of Rp 758.6 billion, and a Total Production Cost (TPC) of Rp 4.55 trillion. The project demonstrates a Return on Investment (ROI) of 16.06%, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 10.14%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 3 years and 5 months, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 31.03%. Based on these indicators, the proposed isooctane plant is considered economically feasible for implementation.
