Abstract

Sodium hydrogen carbonate is a compound with diverse uses in various industries. It is used in the food industry as a baking leavening agent, in the detergent industry to increase the pH of detergents, and in the pharmaceutical industry as an ingredient in antacids. Due to its numerous uses, demand for sodium hydrogen carbonate is expected to continue to increase in the future, thus creating a significant opportunity to establish a sodium hydrogen carbonate factory in Indonesia. This sodium hydrogen carbonate factory is planned for construction in 2029 with a production capacity of 85,000 tons per year in the JIIPE area, Gresik. The factory will operate 330 days per year and employ 190 people. Sodium hydrogen carbonate is produced through a carbonation process, which begins with dissolving sodium carbonate to form a saturated solution. This solution is then reacted with carbon dioxide gas. The reactor output mixture is channeled to a Rotary Vacuum Filter (RVF) to separate the precipitate (cake) from the filtrate. The cake is then fed to a rotary dryer to dry the product. The dried sodium hydrogen carbonate solid is then uniformly sized using a ball mill to reach a particle size of 100 mesh. The final sodium hydrogen carbonate product, with a purity of over 99%, is then stored in a product silo.
