Abstract

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction, including in the context of fitness and health. In the gym environment, interpersonal communication between trainers and members plays a crucial role in motivating, guiding, and supporting members to achieve their fitness goals. This research was conducted at Fit Hub Manyar Kertoadjo, one of Indonesia’s rapidly growing modern fitness centers, with the aim of analyzing how trainers’ interpersonal communication strategies influence members’ motivation and the success of their training programs. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with trainers and members, direct observation of training sessions, and supporting documentation. Data analysis was carried out using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings indicate that trainers apply interpersonal communication strategies through the dimensions of openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. These strategies are realized through verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as the use of digital media to maintain engagement beyond training sessions. Supporting factors include trainers’ emotional intelligence, consistent positive feedback, and warm interpersonal relationships. However, challenges were also identified, such as the use of technical terms that are difficult for beginner members to understand and the limitations of digital communication in conveying nonverbal cues. Overall, this study concludes that effective interpersonal communication plays a significant role in enhancing motivation, fostering member loyalty, and accelerating the achievement of fitness goals in the gym. The findings contribute academically to the study of health communication and provide practical insights for the fitness industry, particularly in developing trainers’ interpersonal communication skills.
