Abstract
The design of the photography book "The Heroes Monument and the 10 November Museum in Surabaya as an Effort to Preserve Indonesian History" aims to create educational visual media that can preserve and convey the historical values of the nation's struggle to the public, especially the younger generation. This study uses three data collection methods, namely interviews with related parties, direct observation of the condition of the monument and museum, and distribution of questionnaires to various groups of people to determine their perceptions and needs for history learning media. Despite its significant historical value, questionnaire data distributed shows low frequency of visits by the public, especially the younger generation, to this historic monument. Several factors contributing to the lack of interest in visiting the Heroes Monument include limited public knowledge of its historical value, accessibility and distance constraints, and the perception that the monument is less appealing to certain groups, especially the digital generation who are more accustomed to dynamic visual media. To address these issues, a photography book was designed that combines high-quality visual documentation of the monument's architecture and museum collections, complemented by a concise, easy-to-understand narrative. This approach aims to facilitate a wide range of groups, from students to the general public, in understanding history. This photography book is expected to serve as an innovative historical learning medium, increase public appreciation for the nation's cultural heritage, and support the development of cultural tourism in Surabaya. Thus, this work can bridge efforts to preserve traditional history with the needs of modern visual communication. Keywords: Photography Books, Heroes Monuments, Historical Preservation, Visual Documentation.
