Abstract

In Indonesia, the concept of beauty was often associated with religious and cultural values, where permanently altering the face or body is considered contrary to religious teachings. On the other hand, a new discourse has emerged that emphasizes the concept of self-empowerment and individual freedom over their bodies. The development of social media such as TikTok plays a role in shaping beauty standards, with beauty influencer Dosen Kecantikan promoting body modification procedures in beauty clinics on her TikTok account. This study examined how the discourse of body modification is constructed in the content on Dosen Kecantikan's TikTok account, using descriptive qualitative methods and Rodney H. Jones' digital discourse analysis, which includes four analytical aspects: text, context, action and interaction, and ideology and power. The results of the study indicate that the discourse of body modification is constructed through the use of self-empowerment-themed texts, including captions and voice-over scripts, designed by Dosen Kecantikan, within the social context of Indonesian society that is contrary to the body modification agenda. Through visuals in its content, Dosen Kecantikan frames aesthetic procedures as normal and resists natural beauty standards. Interactions in the form of comments and likes indicate public polarization, with the majority of the audience supporting the Dosen Kecantikan's body modification agenda. Elements of ideology and power demonstrate how women's bodies are constructed as commodities through endorsements and promotions of clinics, procedures, and beauty products. This study concludes that the discourse of body modification by Dosen Kecantikan, besides aiming to encourage women to normalize body modification actions to improve their appearance, also refers to the commodification of beauty, marked by the presence of promotional texts related to doctors and beauty clinics. Keywords: Digital Discourse Analysis, Body Modification, Plastic Surgery, TikTok, Dosen Kecantikan
