Abstract

This preliminary plant design proposes the establishment of a Potassium Sulfate (K₂SO₄) factory with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year in solid form. The plant is intended to be built in Indonesia to meet the increasing demand for potassium sulfate, particularly in the agricultural sector where it is widely used as a fertilizer, such as for tobacco cultivation. The production process employs magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO₄·7H₂O) and potassium chloride (KCl) as raw materials, which react at 60°C with a conversion efficiency of 99% to form potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride. The process involves evaporation to achieve a saturated solution, crystallization, centrifugation, drying at 89°C, cooling, and milling to obtain a final product size of 100 mesh. The plant is designed to operate continuously for 330 days per year with 150 employees under a line-and-staff organizational structure. The proposed location is Manyar, Gresik, with a land area of 17,500 m². The economic evaluation shows a Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) of Rp. 992.98 billion and a Total Capital Investment (TCI) of Rp. 1.36 trillion. Annual raw material costs reach Rp. 1.35 trillion, while total production costs are estimated at Rp. 2.18 trillion. With annual sales revenue projected at Rp. 2.51 trillion, the financial analysis indicates an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 18.9%, a Return on Investment (ROI) of 19% before tax and 15% after tax, a Payback Period (PBP) of 3 years and 5 months, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 34%. These results demonstrate that the proposed plant is technically and economically feasible.
