Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine and validate the influence of digital exploitation capability and digital exploration capability on the transformation performance of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with market driven business model innovation and market-driving business model innovation as mediating variables. This research adopts a quantitative approach using primary data. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire. The study population comprised 151,258 business units in Surabaya, based on data from the Surabaya Cooperative and SME Office (Diskop UKM Surabaya) for the period 2020–2024. The sample was determined using purposive sampling, resulting in 124 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using variance-based Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method, supported by SmartPLS version 4.0 software. The findings reveal that both digital exploitation and digital exploration capabilities significantly influence market-driven and market-driving business model innovation. Furthermore, market-driving business model innovation has a positive effect on the transformation performance of MSMEs in Surabaya, while market-driven business model innovation does not. Additionally, market-driving business model innovation mediates the relationship between digital exploration capability and MSME transformation performance. However, market-driven business model innovation does not mediate the relationship between digital exploitation capability and MSME transformation performance.
