Abstract
ABSTRACT Street art is a form of visual expression in public spaces that contributes significantly to the social and visual identity of a city. However, negative perceptions—particularly associating it with vandalism—remain prevalent among Generation Z. This study presents the design of an expository documentary film that explores the role of graffiti and murals in Surabaya as effective tools for education and public awareness. The documentary delves into the history, creative processes, and challenges faced by street artists, aiming to distinguish artistic expression from acts of vandalism. Utilizing a dynamic visual approach, in-depth interviews, and questionnaire data on the media preferences of Generation Z (ages 17–22), the film seeks to foster a more informed and appreciative perspective on street art. The anticipated outcome is an increased public appreciation—especially among Generation Z—for street art, along with the promotion of dialogue between artists, communities, and local authorities. The documentary aspires to serve as an effective medium for raising awareness of street art’s positive contributions to urban dynamics and the importance of legal spaces for creative expression. Keywords : Street Art, Documentary Film, Generation Z.
