Abstract
This illustration book design report aims to introduce and explore information about kupang as a typical cultural identity of Sidoarjo to late teenagers. Kupang, as one of Sidoarjo's culinary icons, has abundant natural resources and is closely related to local culture, so it can be used as an attractive educational medium for the younger generation. This book is designed with a visual approach that suits the characteristics of teenagers, combining manual illustrations with watercolor techniques to realistically display the characteristics of kupang, so that the message to be conveyed can be more easily understood and feels alive. With this approach, this report is expected to not only provide useful information, but also give an aesthetically appealing impression to the reader. The method used in this design is descriptive qualitative data analysis, which includes interviews, observations, questionnaires, and literature studies. The results of the analysis were summarized in the keyword “Kupang: Treasure from Sidoarjo,” which was then outlined in the form of visual, verbal, and contemporary media concepts. This concept includes the selection of illustrations, the use of color tones, layouts, and the right typography so that the information conveyed is easily understood by readers. In designing this illustration, the author does not use photos, but makes it a reference to redraw with watercolor style, which is then processed with editing to add sharpness and color details to be ready for printing. This illustrated book includes biological descriptions of kupang, from its origins, Sidoarjo profiles related to kupang in Balongdowo Village, to stories of kupang processing businesses. The process discussed includes the search for kupang in the sea, the separation of shell and meat, and the various kinds of kupang processing done by the local community. A deeper understanding of these issues is expected to raise awareness of Sidoarjo's natural and cultural wealth, foster a sense of pride and concern for local identity, and encourage the younger generation to recognize and preserve the potential of their region.
