Abstract

Film is a medium that can influence various aspects of societal life, including feminism. Barbie The Movie is a form of media that addresses feminist issues. Barbie can inspire real-world women to aspire and dream. This research aims to analyze and understand how the representation of characters in the Barbie film exhibits signs of feminism using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis focusing on sign, object, and interpretant. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method with a constructivist paradigm. The research subject is the Barbie 2023 film, and the object of the study is the representation of feminism in the Barbie 2023 film. The unit of data analysis involves observing the sign systems conveyed through scenes using theories as the foundation of the research. Data collection techniques include primary methods such as documentation and observation, and secondary methods involve various literature sources. This research corpus includes eight out of 46 scenes from the entire Barbie film selected for their portrayal of objects, visuals, and audio containing feminist themes. The findings indicate that these eight scenes demonstrate feminist movements characterized by objects, visuals, and audio. The Barbie film also reflects gender injustices that often occur in daily life.
