Abstract
An acetanilide plant from aniline and acetic acid with an acetylation process with a capacity of 60,000 tons/year will be established in Karanganyar Beluk Kidul Industrial Estate, Sroyo, Jaten District, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java. The main raw material is aniline obtained from PT Mitra Tsalasa Jaya South Tangerang and the second material is acetic acid obtained from PT Indo Acidatama Tbk Karang Anyar, Central Java and the third raw material is activated carbon obtained from PT Javaindo Purestar Carbon Mojokerto, East Java. The manufacture of acetanilide by acetylation process is first aniline and acetic acid (100% excess) heated to a temperature of 150⁰C fed to the reactor. The reaction runs under operating conditions at 150⁰C with a pressure of 1 atm and a reaction time of 6 hours. This reaction produces two products. The top product is acetic acid vapor and water. The bottom product of the reactor is fed to the cooler to a temperature of 80⁰C and enters the decolorizer tank for the purification process (blanching) by adding active carbon. The results of the decolorizer process are fed to the rotary drum vacuum filter to be separated between the asetanilide solution and activated carbon. The asetanilide solution that is already clean from activated carbon is then fed to the crystallizer to be crystallized. After the crystallization process, the mixture of crystals and mother liquor is fed to a centrifuge. Asetanilide crystals are fed to rotary dryer for drying process. Asetanilide crystals from the rotary dryer and cyclone are fed to the cooling conveyor to cool to 32⁰C and fed to the ball mill to be crushed and uniformed in size to 100 mesh. Asetanilide crystals that have been uniform in size are then fed to the asetanilide silo.
