Abstract

The concept of adapting an artwork to other media has become increasingly popular over time. Narratives often go through changes and expansions when adapted to different media. This study was conducted to understand the phenomenon of transmedia storytelling from web series to film Sore: A Wife from the Future. The study aims to analyze and understand the transformation of the story as it moves between media. The focus of this study is to examine the expansion of the narrative in the film resulting from the adaptation of the web series by the same director. This research refers to Henry Jenkins’ (2010) theory of transmedia storytelling, which explains seven principles as guidelines for understanding how narrative spreads across media. Based on this theory, this research examines how these principles are applied in the distribution of narratives and the unique contributions of each medium. This research uses a qualitative approach, with narrative analysis and multimodal discourse analysis to examine narrative expansion and shifts in meaning across various media. Data collection was conducted through an analysis of the YouTube web series and film Sore: A Wife from the Future. Research findings indicate that the narrative and storyline in the film version have expanded and become more complex, providing a new perspective and a deeper understanding of the narrative as a complete whole. Aside from the transition between media, changes in meaning in several aspects are also influenced by the cross-media interactions presented in the web series and the film. This research indicates that both media make unique contributions while still maintaining narrative coherence.
