Abstract

This study aims to analyze audience reception of Ferry Irwandi’s YouTube content discussing occult practices and shamanism as forms of deception within society. The research focuses on understanding how audiences interpret the rational and educational messages constructed by Ferry Irwandi through Stuart Hall’s encoding–decoding theory. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews involving five informants from diverse social, cultural, and religious backgrounds. The findings reveal that audiences do not interpret Ferry Irwandi’s messages uniformly. Some audiences accept his construction that shamanistic practices constitute forms of deception that should be critically examined. Others negotiate the meaning by maintaining their belief in certain spiritual practices that they perceive as possessing cultural and religious significance. Meanwhile, another group rejects this construction, arguing that it overlooks the cultural context and personal experiences that shape their perspectives. These findings highlight that digital media functions not only as a space for education but also as an ideological arena where meanings are negotiated between modern rationality and cultural traditions. This study contributes to media and cultural communication scholarship by demonstrating how Indonesian audiences interpret digital content through complex and contextual frameworks of values.
