Abstract

The Korean drama The Penthouse: War In Life is one of the most watched Korean drama during its broadcast period. This drama raises various issues ranging from social class, power, to parents ambitions toward education which evoke various responses from the audience. The method used is qualitative with Stuart Hall’s reception analysis approach. The subjects of this study is mothers who watched the Korea drama The Penthouse: War In Life. This study aims to determine how mothers accept parents ambitions toward education depicted in the drama. Data collection was carried out using in-depth interview. The results of the study show that the acceptance of mothers who watched the drama regarding parents ambitions toward education is divide into two categories, negotiated and oppositional. Mothers accept parents ambitions toward education as something positive because it is a form of parental responsibility and affection. However, some reject the idea and say that parents’ ambition for education are a form of pressure from parents on children to gain recognition from others.
