Abstract
The consumption of fossil energy, particularly petroleum, continues to show an increasing trend. In fact, there are some conditions indicating that petroleum resources are approaching their supply limits. In addition to the issue of fuel availability, exhaust gases from the combustion of petroleum contribute to the greenhouse effect. Based on this, there is a need for increased focus on alternative fuels that are also more environmentally friendly. Crude palm oil (CPO) emerges as a viable vegetable oil alternative, especially for diesel engines. This experimental study involves biodiesel made from used cooking oil (B100) to assess its impact on engine performance and exhaust emissions. The study uses B100 and B30 as reference fuels. Experimental procedures involve testing engine performance characteristics such as power, thermal efficiency (TE), specific fuel consumption (SFC), and torque. The tests are conducted on a diesel engine coupled with a generator loaded with an incandescent lamp. Load conditions vary from 0.5 kW to 4.5 kW. The results show that B100 produces lower power, torque, and TE by 1.68%, 1.7%, and 21%, respectively. Additionally, B100 shows a 36% higher SFC compared to B30. Significantly, exhaust emissions of HC and smoke opacity are reduced by 14.4% and 73%, respectively, with the use of B100 compared to B30.
