Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the audience's perception of body shaming actions shown in the Indonesian version of the film 200 Pounds Beauty. Body shaming, as a form of insulting someone's physical appearance, has become a social action that is increasingly getting attention in various media, including films. The film 200 Pounds Beauty, adapted from a Korean film with the same title, tells the journey of a woman who undergoes a physical transformation to gain social acceptance and love. This film contains a number of scenes that contain elements of body shaming, both those carried out by other characters and those carried out by the main character towards herself. Film media is one of the supporting factors to help restore self-confidence and change audience perceptions. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method that aims to examine, explain, and describe in depth the phenomenon that is happening. Data were collected through interviews and documentation with audiences who had watched this film, as well as analysis of reactions and opinions in the film scenes. The number of informants in this study was 8 people selected according to predetermined criteria through purposive sampling techniques. Based on the results of the study conducted with the eight informants, there were various perceptions from each audience regarding body shaming discrimination that often occurs in the community. Some audiences felt that the film showed an acceptable social reality and conveyed a message about the importance of self-change to gain recognition, while others criticized the film for reinforcing negative stereotypes about bodies that do not conform to social beauty standards. On the other hand, some audiences also realized that the body shaming shown should be seen as something negative and should be avoided in everyday life. Key : body shaming, film, audience perception, 200 Pounds Beauty Indonesia, discrimination
