Abstract
The presence of online dating applications has now changed people's behavior patterns in terms of finding a mate or partner. Of the many dating applications, the most popular is the Tinder application. Tinder is an online dating platform that was released by Sean Read, Justin Mateen and Jonathan Badin in 2012. Apart from being considered easy to find a partner and getting a positive response from its users, on the one hand Tinder is also considered as a society that has a negative impression. The number of Tinder users who abuse the application so that negative news appears on the Tinder application. For example, news of mutilation that occurred in the Kalibata City apartment, news of fraud that occurred in the city of Banyumas which took a motorbike away, to news of sexual predators on the online dating application Tinder. With the negative news, it can cause changes in user attitudes, especially among teenagers. This study discusses the acceptance of Surabaya teenagers to negative news on the online dating application Tinder. The adolescent acceptance was analyzed using the reception analysis theory proposed by Stuart Hall with the encoding-decoding model. This study uses a qualitative type through a virtual ethnographic approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through participant observation, interviews and documentation. The results showed that most of the teenagers included in the negotiated position category where they thought that the negative news on the online dating application could cause feelings of anxiety and worry in using Tinder, but with the negative news they became more careful users and selective in choosing matches. Meanwhile, a small proportion of teenagers are included in the oppositional position category who reject the negative news and consider that a crime is not only found in the online dating application Tinder, but on any social media it can also invite crime if users do not use the application well and wisely. Keywords : reception analysis; tinder; negative news
