Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the public's perception of the meaning of the belis symbol in the traditional wedding of Sikka Regency. Belis or dowry is property given by the groom to the bride at the time of marriage. The fact shows that the material symbols (belis) in Sikka traditional marriages can have an impact on socio-economic position. Weak understanding of the position of the material sometimes causes conflict. This type of research is descriptive qualitative by conducting in-depth research on seven informants. From the results of the study, it is known that the Sikka traditional wedding tradition and the symbols contained in it are not burdensome. This wedding tradition has been carried out since the days of the Sikka kingdom which was then preserved from generation to generation by the Sikka community. If this tradition (culture) is lost, it means that there is a problem that will cause the destruction of the culture. Keyword: Perceptions, Symbols, Traditional Marriages, Belis
