Abstract
The province of East Kalimantan is known for the existence of the Dayak Tribe. However, the culture and tradition of East Kalimantan itself cannot highlight its existence because of the heterogeneous demographic structure. Most of the population living in East Kalimantan are immigrants from other areas, which are dominated by ethnic Javanese, Bugis, and Banjarnese. For this reason, to revive the distinctiveness and cultural identity of East Kalimantan, a cultural center is designed in Balikpapan City which can become a tourist and educational place, both for the people of East Kalimantan itself and outsiders. Balikpapan was chosen as the design location because of the city's rapid development and its infrastructure compared to other regions or cities in East Kalimantan. The design method used is hybrid architecture, which combines the traditional architectural approach of Rumah Lamin and the concept of a modern architectural approach. The traditional architectural approach of Rumah Lamin is applied to the concept of inner space in the form of circulation and spatial arrangement based on its hierarchy. In addition, the application of the Rumah Lamin's parameters is also applied to the building style, where the roof of the building has a slope that is quite extreme and the use of a stage form, as well as the achievement of the main building through stairs. While the concept of a modern architectural approach is applied to the openings, materials, and interiors of the building. The results of the design are realized in the form of a Dayak cultural center building in East Kalimantan with a view resembling Rumah Lamin which was later modernized through collaboration with the facade display and the use of materials with its main function consisting of museums and galleries. As a multifunctional building, the cultural center is designed to offer various facilities for local people, as well as domestic and foreign tourists through the presence of a library, studio classes, auditorium, and cafeteria.
