Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world's largest coffee producers; however, the competitiveness of its processed coffee exports in the international market remains relatively low, particularly in Malaysia, one of Indonesia's strategic trading partners within the ASEAN region. This condition highlights the need to enhance export competitiveness and identify the factors influencing the export volume of Indonesian processed coffee. This study aims to analyze the level and development of the competitiveness of Indonesia's processed coffee exports in the Malaysian market during the 2013–2024 period, identify the factors affecting the export volume of Indonesian processed coffee to Malaysia, and compare Indonesia's export competitiveness with that of its major competitors in the Malaysian market. This study employs secondary data from 2013–2024 obtained from UN Comtrade, the World Bank, Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the International Coffee Organization (ICO), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The analytical methods used include the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Export Product Dynamics (EPD), and the Gravity Model. The results indicate that all RCA values for Indonesia's processed coffee (HS 090121) are below one, with an average value of 0.0712, indicating weak comparative competitiveness. The EPD analysis places Indonesia in the Lost Opportunity position, reflecting a declining market share despite growing market demand. The Gravity Model estimated using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) reveals that Gross Domestic Product and the exchange rate have a positive and significant effect on the export volume of Indonesian processed coffee to Malaysia, while the Consumer Price Index and economic distance have a negative and significant effect. Meanwhile, the international coffee price has a positive but insignificant effect on export volume. These findings suggest the need to strengthen downstream coffee industry policies, improve product quality and value added, and reinforce export market penetration strategies to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia's processed coffee exports in the Malaysian market.
