Abstract

Tobacco is one of the plantation commodities with significant economic value for farmers in Lamongan Regency, including Wateswinangun Village, Sambeng District. However, the sustainability of tobacco farming faces several challenges, including price fluctuations, high production costs, environmental risks, and limited access to technology, capital, and institutional support. This study aims to analyze the sustainability status of tobacco farming based on ecological, economic, social, technological, and institutional dimensions and to identify the most sensitive attributes in each dimension. The study was conducted from June to July 2026, involving 83 farmer respondents selected using simple random sampling from a population of 498 tobacco farmers. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The analysis was conducted using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) with a modified RAPFISH approach, complemented by leverage and Monte Carlo analyses. The results showed a multidimensional sustainability index of 66.25, categorized as fairly sustainable. The sustainability indices for the ecological, economic, social, technological, and institutional dimensions were 68.97, 59.91, 79.98, 72.83, and 49.52, respectively. The most sensitive attributes for each dimension were land suitability, selling price stability and profit, participation in farmer groups, climate information systems, and the role of financial institutions, respectively. The difference between the MDS and Monte Carlo indices was less than 5 points across all dimensions, indicating that the analysis results were relatively stable. These findings highlight the need to strengthen land management, price stabilization, farmer institutions, access to climate information, technology, and financing.
