Abstract

Laundry wastewater contains anionic surfactant Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) and organic compounds with high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) values that are persistent and difficult to degrade biologically, posing a risk of aquatic environmental pollution. This study aims to analyze the effect of UV-C intensity and TiO₂ surface area on photocatalysis, the effect of UV-C intensity and FeSO₄:H₂O₂ ratio on the photo-Fenton process, and to compare both processes in degrading COD and LAS in laundry wastewater using a baffle batch recirculation reactor with a wave maker flow system. Samples with initial COD of 342.2 mg/L, LAS of 904.4 mg/L, and TSS of 350 mg/L were pretreated by coagulation-flocculation using PAC, achieving 80.57% TSS removal to improve UV-C penetration. Variables included UV-C intensity (3×9 and 3×11 Watts), Baffle : Katalis TiO2 Ratio (4 : 1 ,2 : 1, 1,33 : 1 , dan 1 : 1), and FeSO₄:H₂O₂ ratio (1:10, 1 : 20, 1 : 0, dan 1:40) with an optimum contact time of 60 minutes, analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression (Minitab). Results showed that the optimum photocatalysis condition was at 11 Watts and 1 : 1 Baffle : Katalis TiO2 Ratio, achieving COD removal of 93.89%, LAS of 99.55%, and final pH of 7.9. The optimum photo-Fenton condition was at 11 Watts and ratio 1:20, achieving COD removal of 94.54%, LAS of 99.90%, and final pH of 2.7. Photo-Fenton yielded higher removal efficiency, while photocatalysis produced a more neutral effluent pH. The wave maker improved COD removal by 3.07% in photocatalysis and 6.34% in photo-Fenton through enhanced flow homogeneity and pollutant contact with UV-C light.
