Abstract
The rapid advancement of digital technology has led to widespread gadget use across nearly all segments of society, including young children in their golden age of development. This condition demands active parental involvement in building appropriate communication patterns and parenting styles to supervise children's gadget use. This study aims to identify the communication patterns and parenting styles applied by parents in supervising gadget use among young children, as well as to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors parents face in this process. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews and documentation as data collection techniques with six parent informants who have children 5-10 years in Sidoarjo Regency. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on the Miles and Huberman model. This study is grounded in Parental Mediation Theory and Family Communication Patterns Theory. The findings show that most families applied a democratic communication pattern that combines conversational openness with sustained conformity, while one family exhibited a more protective pattern that was still accompanied by warmth and logical explanation. In terms of parenting style, parents tended to adopt an authoritative approach through consistent rule-setting, rewards, and consequences. Parental mediation was manifested in four forms: restriction of duration and content, monitoring/co-using, active communication, and digital literacy. Supporting factors included the use of technical features, support from extended family members, and reward systems, while inhibiting factors included time constraints due to work, peer pressure on children, and difficulty controlling short-video content algorithms. Keywords: communication patterns, parenting style, gadget supervision, early childhood, parental mediation
