Abstract
Methyl chloride is a chemical intermediate widely utilized across various industrial sectors, including the silicone, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical industries, as well as other chemical sectors. It serves as a raw material for the production of methylchlorosilanes, an intermediate in organic compound synthesis, and a feedstock for various cellulose derivatives. With the growth of both domestic and global industries, the demand for methyl chloride continues to rise annually. In Indonesia, the demand for methyl chloride is currently met through imports; therefore, establishing a domestic methyl chloride plant offers promising prospects for reducing reliance on imported products while simultaneously meeting national industrial needs. The proposed methyl chloride plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2030 with an annual production capacity of 95,000 tons, located in the Serang Industrial Estate, Banten. The plant will operate continuously for 330 days per year, employing a workforce of 144 personnel. The production of methyl chloride is carried out via a hydrochlorination process using methanol and hydrochloric acid as raw materials, facilitated by a solid catalyst. Prior to entering the reactor, the methanol and hydrochloric acid are conditioned to meet specified operating parameters and then fed into a multitube reactor operating at 150°C and 1 atm. The hydrochlorination reaction occurring within the reactor is exothermic, achieving a conversion rate of 99.8%. The reactor effluent is subsequently sent to a distillation column to separate the methyl chloride product from water, unreacted materials, and other components, thereby yielding methyl chloride that meets purity specifications. The final product is then cooled and stored in a storage tank at a temperature of 32°C and a pressure of 5 atm before being marketed.
