Abstract

Electroplating industrial wastewater contains heavy metal ions such as copper and lead, which are harmful to the environment when discharged without prior treatment. One effective method for reducing the concentration of these heavy metals is ion exchange using cation resin, because the process is simple, does not produce by-products, and the resin can be regenerated for reuse. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in resin height (20; 25; 35; 45; 55 cm) and wastewater flow rate (30; 55; 65; 75; 80 mL/min) on the removal efficiency of Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ from electroplating wastewater using an ion exchange column filled with Amberlite IR120 Na resin. The wastewater was passed through the column in three recirculation cycles, the residual metal concentrations were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), and the equilibrium data obtained were analyzed using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that increasing the resin height increased the metal removal efficiency due to the availability of more active sites, while increasing the flow rate decreased the efficiency due to the shorter contact time. The highest removal efficiencies were 99.96% for Cu²⁺ and 99.61% for Pb²⁺, with the most economical operating conditions obtained at a resin height of 35 cm and a wastewater flow rate of 80 mL/min, resulting in final Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ concentrations of 0.080 mg/L and 0.094 mg/L, respectively, which met the electroplating wastewater quality standards. The adsorption equilibrium data for Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ on Amberlite IR-120 Na resin generally conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption process occurred as a monolayer on the homogeneous resin surface. Thus, the ion exchange column method using Amberlite IR-120 Na resin was proven to be effective in reducing heavy metal concentrations in electroplating wastewater.
