Abstract

Banana is one of Indonesia’s leading horticultural commodities, with the largest production in Indonesia and ranked third in the world. However, this high production capacity has not been matched by Indonesia’s banana export performance in international market. This study aims to analyze the comparative advantage, competitive advantage, and trade spezialization of Indonesian bananas in the international market. This study used secondary time series data with Harmonized System (HS) code 0803 for the period 2015 – 2024. The analysis methods used include Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Export Product Dynamic (EPD), and Trade Specialization Index (ISP). The RCA analysis shows that Indonesian bananas don’t have comparative advantage in the international market because the average RCA value is below one. The EPD analysis indicates that the export competitive position of Indonesian banana varies of each target country, which Hongkong and Japan markets are in the rising star position, Malaysia, Korea, and Singapore are in the falling star position, while China and United Arab Emirates are in the lost opportunity position. ISP analysis indicates that Indonesia acts as a banana exporting country in the export maturity stage, with an ISP value close to one. Therefore, improving Indonesia’s banana export competitiveness needs to be pursed through better productivity, product quality, and diversification of target markets.
