Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has now entered the emotional sphere through the phenomenon of Grief Tech (grief technology). The film Esok Tanpa Ibu, which features the AI system "I-Bu" as a maternal substitute, triggers various diverse interpretations. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with six motherless informants in Indonesia selected via purposive sampling, and subsequently analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing stages. The findings demonstrate that informants acknowledged AI's capacity to imitate external communication behaviors, such as a gentle voice and small acts of attentiveness, yet the system is deemed to fail in replicating the lived experience (real-life experience) and authentic emotional bond of a mother. The distribution shows that three informants occupied the dominant-hegemonic position, accepting AI merely as a transitional grief companion. Meanwhile, two informants held a negotiated position, accepting AI strictly as a static memory storage medium while restricting two-way interaction to avoid dependency delusions. Lastly, one informant adopted an oppositional position, as the artificial perfection of AI instead triggered inner conflict and reopened traumatic wounds caused by maternal abandonment.
