Abstract
This study examines the application of Joseph A. DeVito’s Interpersonal Communication Theory within the Sedjiwa Peer Counselor community, an initiative driven by adolescents’ tendency to seek emotional support from peers rather than adults due to fears of authoritarian judgment or the negative stigma associated with professional mental health services. Focusing on the dimensions of openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality, this descriptive qualitative research explores how peer counselors facilitate emotional and social support. Data gathered through in-depth interviews with Sedjiwa counselors reveals that establishing an egalitarian relationship and strong rapport during the initial interaction using attentive behaviors and informed consent is critical to ensuring client comfort and openness. The findings indicate that Sedjiwa peer counselors engage in structured two way communication that functions as a non-judgmental, objective sounding board rather than a source of binary right-or-wrong answers. This approach intentionally fosters adolescent autonomy and personal responsibility by guiding clients to evaluate the consequences of their own choices, thereby preventing unhealthy dependency on the counselor. However, clear ethical boundaries distinguish these peer interactions from professional therapy; the community’s protocol mandates an immediate referral to a professional psychologist if a conseli case escalates beyond the peer counselors’ scope or exhibits high-risk indicators such as self-harm or suicidal ideation.
